I Saw An Angel, I Buried Its Body

Cass Benton Sam has a brilliant way of making Mac Demarco-esque tones sound beautiful but eerie. He combines high-pitched melodies with sounds of sadness and lonesomeness, but in a way that breeds positivity in darkness. You can hear the work put into this record by the layering of guitars and the little sounds here and there that are almost minuscule but perfect the record. This is the kind of record every solo artist wishes they could make. Favorite track: They Said The House Was Empty.

In my dream I could walk on A dusty cloud, I’d sleep on Your shoulder, I’ve been wasting And you’ve been out of town We used to sleep in houses, Up and down like smoke trails, But me I’m up till six am Coming down And I’m sleeping on the phone But she’s never coming home I just need a bed for weeks -- In the car I see a Storm climb up the mountains Endless geometric shapes Just like the road And my vision’s blurred like Shadows on a microphone I need a vacation I’ll up and go And the shuttle busses run To the planes where there’s no one Like a ghost, I only see -- I can drive for miles The desert is a turnstile The concrete’s incandescent Infinitely long And the dark is constant So I can almost taste it Feel some heat under my skin Before it’s gone And the lightning strikes the sand Like a needle through my hand And the radio is on -- In my dream I can walk on A dusty cloud, I wake on Your shoulder in the sunlight Naked in your room We used to sleep in houses TVs in the bedrooms But we forgot our names, oh, Where did the time get to?

Hello demon, Are you the one I’ve been talking to in my sleep? Because my mind is a prison, Made up of factual language and cowboy death scenes Treat my wounds with a crucifix burning, I cannot be left alone Only static plays on my phone And I cannot be left alone I looked inside A crystal of amethyst burning through carpet, I Took a page from your book, Cold as an aryan winter, I stepped inside Where is the daylight? I remember it shone from your skin; Where is the sunshine? I imagine how good it is But save your tears for the light Come step into the night Salutations from the scene I read your books but they never meant much to me Is Jane Austin a close confidante Buried near in the low light of dreams? There were pictures on your TV But I could not see anything No I could not see anything, Anything But save your tears for the light Come step into the night

On the eve of our death we went on Into the dark Our bodies were mostly stars We played games in the gravestones Our blood like champagne We passed over our bodies, Covered in stardust We carried them into your womb And the west was the sun In the west there is love I kissed your face in the night on the beach And your face was the sun And your mouth was a tomb And your teeth were the cuts on my lips They were barely in bloom She cries on the river She cries on the bay She cries in the sunshine She cries in the rain She cries when she dances But she never dances She cries on the plains She cries on the plains And her tears are the stuff of my dreams I could walk on those plains; I could strangle you there And then forget your name I could free you from pain In the east there is sin; In the east there is blood on a silvery pin And your heart on a string Other beautiful things On the eve of our death we went on Into the dark I put your name on a tombstone Took your name from a plaque And on the eve of our death We went on

You were under the illusion Of a bastard or a criminal, And he liked the way you looked in your legs And your dress was like a ribbon, Blowing loose in the wind And your sister was a whore—that’s all you’d say The house was empty when we found it Crooked pictures in the hallway Of a man looking positively wasted There were voices in your room The room we took and made into A sarcophagus for hiding all our days away You were under the shadow Of a man wearing your lipstick Or was he just feasting on our bodies in the night? And our dreams were filled with envy You were near enough to hold me We took our shoes off and danced under the parlor light But it was dark, In the room, And the basement’s where the devil keeps his dues And all the ashes of a hundred-million house fires Made of sinners and their girlfriends, They were murdered with machetes By a man And his mistress They had guns And when she kissed him All the stars took a knee Bowed and prayed to the holy queen Of oblivion and heaven, Satan’s criminal army, And all his guns Cause he has many Many guns The house was empty when we found it You couldn’t wait to tell me about it We’ll put candles in the basement And we’ll both take off our clothes All our clothes

Show Mercy 04:37
Wide awake at home, I feel you in my soul Faster than you know, My fingers are cold To be crushed by A tidal wave of friends, To show mercy When every fling ends -- And when I’m unprepared, The devil takes my soul Disconnect my wounds, Don’t let the heartbreak show To be cut by A pendulum of snow, It is kinder than Growing old with you Well I’m not a soldier I’m just your boyfriend I’ll cut you open And reach inside you I’m just your boyfriend I’ll cut you open I’ll cut you open I’m just your boyfriend

Saw An Angel 06:24
I was looking for the chord To the hearts of all the dead boys Their hands still clutching razor blades— Bleeding on the floor Which was covered in their blood Though there wasn’t quite enough To spill out all of their organs And then spell out the word love And though I can’t because I’m golden I could try and spell it for them Dip my fingers in like ink Wash my hands out in a sink After scattering their body parts, Their insides looked like strings There were markers in the dirt Now their souls are in the earth Now their souls belong to god And I can’t kill him in return Because love is an object And I don’t cry because I’m golden I destroy, never protect And our love is an object Dig a bed for me in dirt Put my body in the earth Cry a river for the worms Then deliver me from birth Dig a bed for me in dirt Put my body in the earth Wash my hands with all the worms Then deliver me from birth Cut a hole into the sky Pull me in and make me die In my dreams where I’m alive Please destroy me in the sky Oh destroyer in the sky Pull me in and make me die In my dreams where I’m alive Please destroy me in the sky Dig a bed for me in dirt Put my body in the earth Cry a river for the worms Then deliver me from birth Oh destroyer in the sky Please destroy me in the sky In my dreams I’m still alive

I always thought you were a fool, Spent six weeks on a plane—off of your head again And you were definitely cool, A couple days in the rain a week, oh You were mine, I was not there— I was in your room, Drinking your poetry in Oh your poems, oh I hated that shit Now you’re off in the fucking garden again We dreamed of Barcelona Nights, You with homemade perfume--oh what a thing to do And you were definitely right, Not a day after June we lost that one too Don’t you look, she get’s older And she gets colder And the night stands at the gate, It shuts her mouth All of the desert is a fire I woke to smoke in the air—too cold to even care My eyes were empty with desire Stuck in the car, say your prayers if you must, I don’t care I was right—you were unfair, May I say once more? With your republican accent and schoolbooks You were such a bore Looking out at the fucking skyline for more And a plane’s like a monster Eating us longer And longer as the blinds close down I kissed your teeth—I kissed the night, Waiting under the storm In a house on the edge of town Where the kids eat their hearts, In the dark where they swarm, Searching only for stars, Gone to sleep in the morgue, See the sepulcher lights, Standing watch in the night, See the sepulcher lights The sepulcher lights

Together 09:35
Catching up, we make good time With you hands on my fingers I can tell you’re still alive Shaking off all the bad dreams, We pass out on the floor And forget that they mean anything Slipping up on your goodbyes I can reach out and touch Your heart lifeless next to mine Keep in touch with the daylight Never mind all the exits As we step into the night To the night And she walked out of the room, Dragging the dead weight she’d been holding onto Her hands covered in alcohol, Her mouth filled with perfume And we danced under the dead light, The devil took our picture too And we walked into that good night, Silent—me and you * * * With the same heart At the same speed You’re awake now Looking through me With the same mind And the same dream Every candle Refracting In the basement In the bedroom In the windows Where the sun shines through In the daytime When the sky’s blue In the garden Where I love you -- Every hour Disappearing On the blankets When we’re talking When you get dressed In the morning And I’m breathing Still sleeping When you walk out Into sunlight When you lie still On the floor at night In the darkness Where I feel you When our hands close And I love you
